Vishindas Wadha: Owner of the Iconic Gurukripa Samosas passes away

Vishindas Wadhwa, founder of the iconic Guru Kripa eatery in Sion, Mumbai, passed away on February 5, 2021 due to a heart ailment.  The man who made samosas famous and then the samosas which made him famous passes away at the age of 76.

It is s being said that, such was and such is the monopoly of Gurukripa Samosas, every theatre in Mumbai orders samosas from Gurukripa. It is being said that till date, 20000 samosas are sold and distributed daily all over Mumbai. People throng at their sion outlet to try their piping hot samosas often accompanied by chole and chutney. Apart from samosas, Gurukripa is also popular for its sindhi chat and tikkis which are hot sellers.

The likes of Amitabh Bacchan, Raj Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor have been fans of his iconic samosas. Also its a phenomena to observe that none of the Gurkripa samosas you will ever eat on any part of the day in any theater will never be cold. They are always served fresh and hot and how they as well as their distributors manage to nail that is a stuff of the legends.

Over the past few months, iconic eateries in Mumbai like Mani’s Lunch Home and Yazdani Bakery have lost their owners. On Thursday, another prominent name was joined to that list. Vishindas Wadhwa, founder of the landmark Guru Kripa restaurant in Sion, passed away at age 76. The 46-year-old Sindhi establishment is famous for its ethnic samosa and chhole tikki which have been savoured by college students of nearby SIES, as well as celebrities and film stars like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.

Wadhwa’s grandson Bharat said, “He suffered a minor heart ailment and passed away. My grandfather will continue to remain an inspiration to us. His family came to India empty-handed as refugees after Partition, leaving behind their ancestral home in Karachi. He set up Guru Kripa as a small stall which then grew in stature and fame after his recipes became so popular. He continued working till the day he fell ill suddenly and had to be hospitalised.”

Wadhwa’s last rites were performed at Sion crematorium. His son Govind carries forward his legacy. God bless his soul. He gave jobs to somany people especiaslly tamilians from Dharavi side.
